Grandma's Biscuits
by Starry Walker
A jar of brown sticky molasses
sits in conversation with a plate
of salty fatback on the stove
craving the buttery biscuits
that grandma rolled out
and cut into perfect circles
with a tin can that once held
the beans that she picked
with her own hands
teaching us that she has never
made excuses about not having a cookie cutter life
And that life can still be sweet
if you use what you have
to create what you want
Starry Walker was born and raised in Greenville SC. This poem is inspired by her great grandmother, Virginia Scott of Fountain Inn South Carolina.
